NHS Pay Dates 2026/27
There is no single NHS pay day. Each employer sets its own, so these are the dates employers have actually published for 2026/27, with the rules behind them and what moves them.
Short answer. Most substantive NHS and HSC staff are paid monthly, near the end of the month. The exact day depends on your employer: the last Thursday of the month at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian, the 27th at Oxford University Hospitals, and a published calendar date between the 23rd and 29th for HSC staff in Northern Ireland. December is paid early everywhere that has published it.
Why There Is No Single NHS Pay Day
Agenda for Change sets what you are paid, not when. Each trust, health board or shared payroll service chooses its own pay day, and many publish them on an intranet or in ESR rather than openly. Tables online headed “NHS pay dates 2026” that give one date per month are describing one employer at best.
What follows is limited to dates employers have published themselves. Where an employer publishes a rule rather than a list, we work the dates out from the rule and say so.
HSC Northern Ireland Pay Dates 2026/27
BSO Payroll Shared Services runs payroll for HSC organisations across Northern Ireland and publishes a full calendar. Payslips appear on Employee Self Service two days before pay day.

England Pay Dates 2026/27
English trusts each run their own payroll or buy it in, so there is no national calendar. Two published examples show the range. Oxford University Hospitals pays on the 27th, moved back to the previous working day at weekends and bank holidays. The Mersey and West Lancashire Lead Employer, which employs resident doctors on rotation across many trusts, publishes a date list with cut-offs.

Scotland Pay Dates 2026/27
For Scotland’s largest boards the published information is a rule rather than a calendar. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian pay on the last Thursday of the month. NHS Grampian pays on the last day of the month, brought forward to the Thursday if that day is a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The table below applies those rules, alongside the Oxford rule for comparison.

Rules: Oxford University Hospitals — Payday is normally the 27th of each month. If that falls on a weekend or bank holiday, you are paid on the last working day before. (Oxford University Hospitals — Getting paid). NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian — Paid on the last Thursday of the month unless otherwise advised. NHS Grampian — Paid on the last day of the month. If the last day falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, you are paid on the Thursday before. Wales Pay Dates
NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership provides payroll services to Welsh health boards, but we could not find a 2026/27 pay calendar published openly by it or by any health board, so no Welsh dates are shown. Check ESR or your health board's intranet.
December Pay and the Long January
Employers that have published December bring it forward before Christmas: Wed, 23 Dec 2026 for HSC Northern Ireland and Tue, 22 Dec 2026 at the MWL Lead Employer. Neither adds an extra payment. It is December’s normal pay arriving early, so the following gap is longer.
In the HSC calendar the gap from 23 Dec to 27 Jan is 35 days, the longest of the year, against 27 days between the November and December pay days. At the MWL Lead Employer it is 35 days. If you budget monthly, plan December’s money to cover five weeks.
Why Some Pay Arrives a Month Later
In the published calendars above, basic pay is paid for the month you are in. Anything that varies — overtime, unsocial hours, bank shifts, expenses, a change of hours or a new pay step — has to reach payroll before that month’s cut-off. In the HSC calendar the deadline for HR changes falls between the 10th and 16th; at the MWL Lead Employer the payroll cut-off falls between the 3rd and 10th. Work claimed or approved after the cut-off is paid the following month.
This is the most common reason a payslip looks short. Before querying it, check whether the missing hours were approved after the cut-off: if so they should appear, in full, on the next payslip.
Your First Pay as a New Starter
If you start after the cut-off, your first month may not make the main pay day. Oxford University Hospitals, for example, says new employees may be paid on a supplementary pay day, usually one or two weeks later. After that you are paid on the normal date.
When a Pay Award or Back Pay Arrives
An award is normally paid on an ordinary pay day, in the first month payroll can process it, with arrears back to its effective date. The most recent example with a published date is Northern Ireland’s 2025/26 award: effective 1 April 2025, paid in February 2026 (monthly pay day Wed, 25 Feb 2026). Full arrears back to 1 April 2025 were paid in February 2026 pay, with no option to spread them. (BSO Payroll Shared Services — AfC February 2026 pay award)

How to Find Your Own Pay Date
- ESR: your payslips and, at many employers, a pay calendar are in Employee Self Service.
- Your intranet: search for “payroll calendar” or “pay dates”. The cut-off dates usually sit in the same document.
- Your last payslip: the pay date printed on it is normally the same pattern each month, except December.
- Bank and agency: bank staff are often paid on a different, sometimes weekly, schedule from substantive staff at the same employer.
